Yes, if you want a password manager that you and your family will actually keep using: 1Password’s apps are the most polished. If cost matters more than polish, Bitwarden’s free plan does the core job for $0.
1Password costs $3.99 a month billed yearly ($47.88) for one person, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. The real question is whether its smoother autofill, Watchtower alerts and Travel Mode are worth about $28 a year more than Bitwarden Premium, or $47.88 more than Bitwarden Free.

What you pay for is friction removed. A password manager only protects you if you use it for every login, and 1Password’s fast, reliable autofill across browsers and phones is the main reason people stick with it.
Watchtower flags weak, reused and breached passwords in one place, and Travel Mode can hide chosen vaults before you cross a border. Over five years at list price, 1Password Individual costs about $239, against $0 for Bitwarden Free.
Bitwarden is the reason 1Password is a choice rather than a necessity. Its free plan has no device or password limits, and its code is open source and audited.
If you try Bitwarden for two weeks and find yourself using it for every login, you don’t need to pay for 1Password. If you keep skipping it because autofill feels clunky, that is the strongest sign 1Password is worth the money.
Start with the free option and be honest about whether you use it. The best password manager is the one you use for every login.
For families with less technical members, a smoother app often decides whether it gets used at all.
About $239 for 1Password Individual at list price, about $99 for Bitwarden Premium, $0 for Bitwarden Free.
Travel Mode is unique to 1Password; if you cross borders with sensitive data, it alone can justify the cost.
Use the 14-day 1Password trial alongside Bitwarden Free and keep whichever you actually opened every day.
A password manager puts every login behind one account, so that account deserves the strongest two-factor protection available. A hardware security key is a small USB or NFC device you tap to sign in; because it checks the website’s real address, a fake login page can’t capture it. 1Password, Bitwarden and Apple Account all support security keys for two-factor sign-in (see 1Password, Bitwarden and Apple setup guides). Register two keys and keep one somewhere safe: Apple requires at least two, and Yubico recommends a spare in case one is lost.
Most laptops with only USB-C ports need the USB-C version of the key instead; check your ports before you buy.
For polish and Travel Mode, yes. For pure value, Bitwarden wins: its free plan covers unlimited passwords and devices and Premium is $19.80 a year.
No. It has a 14-day free trial, then $47.88 a year for an individual at list price (October 2026).
Families is $71.88 a year for up to 5 people, about $14 per person. Bitwarden Families is $47.88 for up to 6.
1Password uses end-to-end encryption and adds a Secret Key to your account password, so a stolen password alone can’t open your vault.
